Training in competences needed for entrepreneurship

Training in competences needed for entrepreneurship is a practical handbook tailored for trainers who want to lead individuals or groups of migrants in acquiring competences in order to develop and start up their own social business.
Given that depending on mentors and mentees attitudes and competences the learning context can be different; the guide should represent a flexible tool that mentors can adapt to mentees’ individual situations.
It is recommended to work with trainers who have sufficient knowledge and information about the economy, business or start-up environment and dynamics. Moreover, trainers should have previuos and relevant experience with conducting trainings in the field of personal development or the development of soft skills and/or other competencies. In case it is not possible to work with experienced trainer, a good idea is to previously consult with business expert or experienced entrepreneur or to invite him/her as guest lecturer in one of the sessions.
It foresees a brief introduction on “experiential teaching of entrepreneurship for mentors” aimed at explaining the role of the trainer, how to use the tool and ensuring that the reader will be familiar with the guide’s principles, goals and deliverables. The document has been structured in 8 sessions to facilitate the mentor through a led step by step process. Avalilable here

Coaching approach

Strengths-based coaching approach can be used with the objective to provide additional support to immigrants. Often, individuals need more than just basic entrepreneurial knowledge and information to start their own business path. It is important for organisations working with immigrants to have the knowledge and skills to help individuals discover what they already know, what worked well and could be used again, which are their strengths they can build upon etc. It has to be kept in mind that giving advices usually isn’t working well since an option, solution or business idea that works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. Individuals have to explore their own interests, abilities and strengths and build upon them in order to achieve success and have the energy and motivation to carry on despite the obstacles that certainly can occur along the way. Coaching is a useful tool to deal with different situations in life – in personal and professional sphere. Emotional needs in the process of entrepreneurship

The methodology of accompaniment in the processes of social entrepreneurship developed in the fram of Sentim, takes into account the needs of entrepreneurs, including emotional needs and use coaching as a tool that can be used to support individuals in the process of personal or career development and help them maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and enable them to become the person they want to be. Since it is a very dynamic and interactive process, individuals providing support to immigrants need to learn how to ask open questions, be an active listener and avoid telling, advising or guiding the other person. It takes time to develop coaching skills; however, even the basic understanding of coaching principles can equip professionals with necessary knowledge and skills needed to support immigrants in their entrepreneurial efforts.

Public administration and social economy

How can public administrations enhance social entrepreneurship?

We talked about this topic during Sentim Multiplier Event, in Burgos. The proposed options or answers to this question can be grouped into five sections: Through networking, through financial instruments and other supports, by promoting training and research, favouring social economy entities in the processes of public procurement and, finally, informing, sensitizing and disseminating.

Detect interests is not easy

We have found that most individuals find it very difficult to identify their interests and skills. At the same time we have realized that most of those entrepreneurs interviewed, especially those who have or have had success in their business, demonstrate openly that they love what they do and, conversely, those who have set up their business «to do something «or» to avoid unemployment «are unlikely to succeed in these businesses.

Normally people do not usually openly that have a business idea or would like to be entrepreneurs, often are dreams that are hidden and remain in the area of the innermost desires as infeasible, and it is this absolutely limiting belief that prevents these people to fulfil those desires.

Sentim project offer ideas and tools to detect interest for entrepreneurship.

How can public administrations enhance social entrepreneurship?

The proposed options or answers to this question can be grouped into five sections: Through networking, through financial instruments and other supports, by promoting training and research, favoring social economy entities in the processes of public procurement and, finally, informing, sensitizing and disseminating.

How to fit social economy projects into the market economy?

Despite the difficulty, almost contradiction, of matching these projects within the competitive and individualistic framework of the market economy, many opportunities were identified such as the importance of people, the horizontality of the social economy, proximity, principles and values that incorporates, projects are more motivating, the answers offered to many of the problems of society, greater social awareness. On the contrary, some threats were warned, as the denomination does not guarantee the spirit (bad labour conditions in some projects, miss of values), too much bureaucracy, the legislation does not help, it is complicated to be competitive in an economy dominated by the economic benefit, lack education and social conscience, social economy means overcome the individualisms and a paradigm change, sometimes we do not know the sector in which we create the social enterpirse.

How to overcome stigmas and prejudices through the implementation of social economy projects?

Situations of discrimination, stigmas and prejudices, are due to cultural issues, ignorance, barriers, the use of language and, ultimately, our own beliefs. We change beliefs through education, information, communication, with the direct contact, through the spaces of encounter, with the daily experience and with the example. We need institutional support and positive discrimination measures to create jobs through social economy projects. Employment that normalizes, communicates and gives value to people.

How to promote social economy projects in a collaborative way?

We can start from the consideration of the needs of the entities (resources) and society (to satisfy needs from a business point of view ). It is important to build networks for the horizontal exchange, the collaboration with mentors, it is necessary to be able to involve the business community. And generate spaces to talk and talk about the little culture of social entrepreneurship in our environment.
